Module Description

Current assessment tools for traumatic brain injury (TBI) have several limitations, and a lack ‎of standard definitions and consistency in clinical management guidelines is a challenge in ‎the evaluation and management of mild TBI (mTBI).
The module will explain the diagnostic ‎dilemma of mTBI in the emergency department and elaborate on why clinicians are ‎desperately seeking a quantitative new evaluation tool.
The module will also highlight the ‎value of using neurological biomarkers in diagnosing mTBI, and how it could reduce ‎multislice computed tomography (MSCT) by up to 30%–40%.‎

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the limitations of the current clinical evaluation pathway for mild traumatic brain injuries.

  • Become familiar with published research on brain injury biomarkers.

  • Learn about the potential benefits of brain–blood biomarkers as a tool in the assessment of patients in the emergency department.

  • Explain the role of neurological biomarkers in the diagnosis of brain injury.
