Module Description

Despite improvements in cell detection technologies, morphology remains a keystone of hematology, particularly with regard to RBCs and platelets. In this module, the speaker will use microscopic images to explain several RBC morphology cases.

Learning Objectives

  • To observe a smear from normal blood, showing the degrees of natural variation in red blood cell (RBC) size and shape, and the importance of staining relative to RBCs.

  • Review a smear showing abnormal RBC morphology, including selected case studies on microcytic and macrocytic anemias.

  • Discuss RBC fragments as an abnormal finding and the importance of differentiating these fragments from platelets.
